This just isn’t your average standard stereotyped B+B. It is very much more like going to stay with your country cousin in her comfortable well-appointed house, but not having to lend a hand doing any of the household chores. Hilary, the owner, had that rare knack of being both helpful when needed, being a fund of local walking and natural history knowledge (the pretty garden seems to attract an enormous amount of colourful bird life), and unobtrusive for the rest of the time, and we were left to treat the house as we would our own coming and going when we pleased, using the comfortable, homely and log-fired sitting room with its books maps and specially prepared local walk leaflets whenever.
The house itself is in some of the loveliest mid-Wales scenery with enough mountain to make the skyline interesting but not so much as scares you from tackling the many walks and rambles with which it is surrounded and which meander through mature broadleaf woodland and along rocky mountain streams as well as the ubiquitous sheep-decorated upland pasture. Talbontdrain, a name which I think includes elements of hawthorn trees bridges and streams, is at the end of a narrow country road and therefore free from traffic (so our dog could wander safely to his heart’s content), and despite being only a couple of miles from the town, gives all the impression of splendid isolation, reinforced by the welcome absence of modern electronic interference - you can feel the silence.

We stayed only one night at the Talbontdrain but it was the best part of a short break in mid-Wales. The location is incredibly picturesque, in a lovely and incontamined valley a few miles from Machynlleth. The guest house is a small, 500-years old farm run by a very welcoming hostess who made us feel at home and served us excellent, home-made dinner cooked with local products. We are looking forward to staying there again, but for longer next time.
